Behind the Design of the Hitch Hiker™ Dog Backpack Carrier

There’s nothing like getting out there with your dog — trail dust on your boots, wind in your face, and your furry companion exploring right alongside you. But every adventure has its tougher stretches. Maybe the trail turns steep, the miles start to stack up, or your pup just needs a breather. That’s where the Hitch Hiker™ Dog Backpack Carrier comes in.

This lightweight, technical backpack was designed for dogs who need a lift every now and then, whether that’s due to age, health, stamina, or size. Our goal was to create a carrier that helps dogs stay included without compromising comfort or security, for them or their humans.

Why We Built It

Whether you have a senior dog with mobility challenges or pint-sized pup with endless heart but limited stride, we designed the Hitch Hiker™ to help keep these dogs a part of the journey. From rugged trails to busy city streets, the streamlined silhouette and stable, close-to-body carry make it just as suited for public transit and daily commutes as it is for outdoor escapes.

While it’s not a replacement for daily exercise, it’s the ideal solution for those in-between moments — when your dog tires out mid-hike, the terrain gets technical, or you’re simply heading to the office together.

Here’s how the Hitch Hiker™ delivers comfort, function, and connection for both you and your canine companion.

A Secure & Comfortable Ride

Engineered for shared adventure and designed for your dog’s comfort, the Hitch Hiker™ packs in thoughtful features that make for a reliable and comfortable ride.

  • An integrated, adjustable harness secures your dog comfortably inside the pack while also allowing them to adjust position

  • Cinch straps add extra security and draw your dog close to your back

  • Dual-locking zippers streamline loading and unloading

  • Air mesh side panels at the base boost airflow for temperature management

The Hitch Hiker™ supports dogs in a forward-facing, upright position, a posture reviewed and approved by veterinarians. It’s suitable for pups up to 40 pounds, but the key is finding the right fit. The Hitch Hiker™ is available in three sizes based on girth: XXS (13-17 inches), XSmall (17-22 inches), and Small (22-27 inches). If your dog is between sizes or has a longer back, we recommend sizing up and adding a soft blanket to keep them comfortable and secure.

Built for the Human, Too

Because every great adventure is a team effort, we made it a priority to design a dog-carrying pack that feels just as good for the human. The Hitch Hiker™ is built like a technical hiking pack, with ergonomic, adjustable features that keep you both moving comfortably and confidently.

  • Adjustable, padded shoulder straps, torso length, and hip belt create a customizable fit, allowing for a dialed-in carry on short and long treks

  • Supportive hip belt with zippered pockets helps distribute the weight evenly and allows easy access to essentials like pick-up bags, treats, and most phones

  • Breathable back panel promotes airflow and helps regulate temperature

  • Reflective trim and light loop for attaching The Beacon™ enhances visibility in low-light conditions

You’ll also find a stretch mesh pocket on the back, perfect for stashing items like a soft flask, packable bowl, or extra layer. A sturdy grab handle makes lifting and shouldering the pack smooth and intuitive, while the adjustable hip belt fits a wide range of waist sizes (21-58 inches / 53-149 centimeters).

Getting Started

Like any new gear, the Hitch Hiker™ becomes more familiar with time and positive experiences. Some dogs may be curious right away, while others take a little longer to warm up. Starting at home with 15- to 30-minute sessions and rewarding with treats can help build comfort and trust, then you can work your way up as your dog gets used to it. Whether you’re at home or on the trail, plan to give your dog a break every 30 to 45 minutes to allow them to stretch, hydrate, and reset.

As always, if your dog has any pre-existing conditions, especially related to joints or the spine, it’s best to consult with your veterinarian before using the carrier.
